54 percent latino residents of yakima county, register and vote. the old white people sure do. and a 76 year old white republican has one goal: maintain the status quo.

I know you mean the "water system" comment to be a poor comparison to serving in Iraq. But in you need to understand, in Yakima, that's like saying he's the guy who hands out oil drilling licenses in North Dakota. Real power, real money, and most importantly real organization that keeps seemingly clueless old white men at the top of the pile. Believe me, when he goes out of office, it will be boots first.

I'm from Yakima, and racist attitudes were prevalent among white people in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. It seems little has changed. I would like to see the Democratic party put serious resources into getting out the youth and minority vote over there.

Aw, a few more lapel pins would solve all his problems.

Can we also address that hideous peak collar on his blazer? Because that is a hideous peak collar. Somehow it's worse than the over-the-top peak collars one might find on a portly gent in a double-breasted suit. Those peaks look like they gave up.

Also, any white person who uses the word "negro" in public life is by definition too decrepit and out-of-touch to effectively represent any entity larger than the dance committee at a senior center.

@1 Thank you, Max. You summed it up beautifully.
Vote if you want positive change for the common good, people!

This is part of the reason I despise Republicans and anyone sick enough to vote for them. Even if you personally are not a racist, misogynistic, homophobe puke, you vote for people who are, and regardless of why you do, it is an act of hatred.

"Negro"? "The Hispanic"? What century is this guy living in? I'd missed those follow-up, double down offenses. Great reporting. Good thing Yakima lost it's effort to maintain it's status quo voting system that kept qualified candidates from local office. Pasco, Wenatchee, and others may consider changing their systems, too, and the WA Legislature should pass the Voting Rights Act to bring us into this century.

In a preceding article on this subject I missed the quote where Senator Honeyford made the moronic "mistake" of referring to citizens of color as "coloreds" (note to self - refill the Adderall scrip ;). Which leaves me feeling like kind of a dick for alleging that in the headline Ansel misrepresented Honeyford's other quote where used the term "of color". Damn sorry Ansel. I do stand by my comments regarding Honeyford's idiocy though ...

I like the part where he says "even my wife has weighed in on the issue". I wonder if it was "Honey, we don't talk that way anymore, remember?"

Check this out if you want to know how he votes - no matter how he talks. No question who he cares about, and it sure isn't the majority in his district.
