Below you will find a one-minute-and-52-second video of Seattle’s own Queen Shmooquan performing her interpretive mind/body soufflé. She is a one-woman rotary cannon of movement and theatrics. (More about Shmooquan here.) In the video, there may be crying. There may be a giant strap-on labial fruit sausage. And you also might see Shmooquan doing her ceremonial regurgitation of chewed Twinkie into the mouths of her two baby rubber chickens. The footage is from a benefit for the Josephine last Saturday at Cappy’s Boxing Gym on 22nd and East Union. (RIP Josephine. Long live Josephine.)

You see, there are performers like Evel Knievel, who jumped motorcycles over school buses. There are performers like Nadia Comăneci, who scored the first-ever perfect 10 on the uneven bars at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. There are performers like Harry Houdini, who hang upside down underwater in straitjackets. And there are performers like Pam Grier, and Joni Mitchell. Queen Shmooquan is somehow them all.
