So what?
2
good. toxic cigarettes stink.
3
Who knew that the only place that the homeless might smoke were public parks?
4
There's no conclusive science to say that smoking in parks is harmful to other people's health. Hence this is simply a feel good measure by smug liberals who want to run other people's lives.
5
So it's still cool to BBQ in a park but one cannot smoke while flipping burgers?
6
No cigarettes, but cigars and pipe tobacco are okay? Seriously?
7
There's lots of things you can't do in public parks. Like be in them between 11:00 pm and 4:00 am. We own the parks. If we decide not to allow smoking in them, that's representative democracy. Don't like it? Write the Mayor. Demonstrate. But it's not some conspiracy. To the right wingers: if you want to smoke outside, do it on your own property.
8
@7: I hardly think of the board of park commissioners as representative democracy. Smokers are also taxpayers, many times over as a matter of fact.
9
Smoking in the park is the only crime for which I'm willing to advocate summary execution.
10
I'll smoke where I want to smoke. Obviously not indoors, but if I want to light up a smoke I will. I am as left wing as they come, but this shit is stupid, counter intuitive and basically again, stupid.
11
Much like smoking, I should add. But them's the breaks. Maybe we should call the entire city a park. But outdoors is outdoors. Smoke is smoke is smoke no matter the source of it. I went down to some casino recently and even as a smoker I couldn't believe the smell of smoke and felt really weird lighting up just for the heck of it. Indoors no. Outside in a park? Really, who cares?
12
Yaaaaaaaay! Finally.
14
Noisy cell phone users are more frequently annoying than an occasional whiff of someone's smoke.
15
Really? Are members of the Parks Board elected? Is Christopher Williams elected? I don't think so.

This is an unaccountable group of appointees who have assumed power over others that they are not entitled to.
16
I remember not so long ago morning after a show at the Sunset your socks would smell like smoke if you'd worn boots. Don't smoke, or like it, but people supporting this ban are supreme quavering puss-lamo-fascists. It's a great litmus test of who shouldn't be trusted with power.
17
all smoking causes cancer. if almaytay jah had wanted man to smoke arb mon he would have installed a righteous chimney in he. the solution is all the mood altering substances should be taken as a suppository. where it belongs.
18
This is such a non-issue. It's illegal to smoke pot in parks, in public for that matter, but that's not stopping people. The problems enforcing laws about drones have been detailed. SPD can't even handle property crime. You can break into people's homes and steal their belongings and they won't do anything about it. If you want to discreetly smoke a cigarette or a bowl in Cal Anderson or at Greenlake, no one is going to stop you.
19
@18: true, but should it be explicitly banned? i hate to agree with @4, but smoke disperses outdoors.
20
This is hardly new territory. Most west coast cities have such bans, including Portland, Tacoma, and Bellingham. I've had to take cigarette butts from my 2yo's hands while watching her at the cal Anderson play equipment. Will it work? I don't know, but at least now I can tell someone to please put it out, and actually have cause.
21
soon they will tell us we cant drink bottled water in the parks too, this city is losing itself one poor counsel vote at a time.

Please wait...
