Mr. Rich Smith, this is old, but what's Shane MCCrae's deal? He was moreso arguing punitive action because he was pissed off, not so much as attacking the utility of VP bering on the subcommittee. Shit reminded me of 'No Exit.' The project was a stupid idea, but why denounce her ability as a competent poet because of one project that was misinterpreted to begin with?

Hi Moveface! I feel like I probably should respond, since you asked what my deal was, but now that I've started typing this, I'm not actually sure what to say other than, you know, I tried to make my deal clear in the interview. I didn't want to punish Vanessa Place--not at all!--but I did think that she had demonstrated an insensitivity to the concerns of people of color that suggested she wasn't well-qualified to be determining the merits of panel proposals on issues particularly affecting people of color. I didn't say anything about her ability as a poet; nor did I--if you were, in fact, referring to me--misinterpret her project. I hope this helps. Have a great week!

Hm, thanks for elaborating. It seems I was the one who misunderstood your argument.

That being said, I did have a question about the facebook post expressing a loss of faith in the poetry community. Why critique the art as an aggregate in the way that you did?

Hi again! I wasn't trying to critique the art of poetry, but I was saying that I was really disheartened by my discovery--and this sounds super naive, I know--of racism in the poetic avant garde. I guess I had always thought that those who are artistically progressive would naturally also be politically progressive, but that of course isn't true at all. It's always a bummer to discover just how wishful one's wishful thinking is, you know?

Please wait...
