I remember that face on my TV. I like this idea, there's gotta be a story there.
2
I like how the 2nd video (5 min in) identifies him as a Scientiist for the Church of Life (that's not my typo).

Must have been before my time, but I fondly remember Pastor Mary, and her "Jesus Water" which came from her sump pump.
5
I remember him, the Kurt Cobain Was Murdered Guy and Goddess Kring. Oh public access nostalgia.

I miss that show so much. When my buddy and I first moved to Seattle in 1993, he was in "giant face" mode, and I taped hours of his shows and brought them back to Chicago to entertain friends. Then he moved into "disciples with black turtlenecks" mode, then finally "staring away from the camera in front of water" mode. Loved it. Miss it.

^ Sorry, by "entertain friends", I meant "spread the good word".

That was the golden age of public access TV in Seattle. Whatever happened to Spud Goodman? He was the king of public access back then.
9
I remember good ol Rev Bruce!

I agree - Seattle Public Access Television, especially in the '80's and'90's was full of totally cool and amazing people and characters and programs. We've talked to Shannon "goddess" Kringen and Spud Goodman and a lot of other access producers like Jeff "deface the nation" Pearson and even Handy and Bandy. Really. We have a documentary about all of them called "Channeling Yourself" that should be out in 2016. Stay tuned.

Heh, I sort of knew Bruce Howard, over the phone anyway. Back in about '92 as a young kid I responded to a singing lessons ad of his in the now defunct Rocket. The way he answered the phone and said "Bruce Howard speaking..." He said it very slowly and all Hannibal Lectorish sans accent. I talked to him for a moment about lessons, but the guy kinda spooked me. Then just a couple of days later a friend and I randomly caught him on Public Access in a black and white video with him from the neck up wearing a reverend collar and yelling something about God and his name and phone number was at the bottom of the screen and I couldn't believe it was the same guy I had called about singing lessons a couple of days prior. And after seeing that video I knew the guy was definitely not all there so I just started calling him and talking/fucking with him over the phone regularly and at random and that went on for well over a decade. My friends and I used to prank call a lot when we were kids so that's the main reason I started calling him at first. But then it just got weird and we started talking a bit here and there. For years I would call that guy at random and he would talk about some shit that was really out there, mainly having to do with metaphysics and/or money, but I also think he was fucking with me as much as I was with him. He was also for hire back then and sang at churches. He tried to get me to come to his place over the years, but our talks over the phone had gotten too out there and I didn't think it would've been a good idea. But I was a weird kid into some weird shit and this guy just intrigued me. Plus I had now been watching him on Public Access too and the weirdness was just escalating. Somewhere back there I think he started recruiting people, as I also used to talk to that shorter dark haired lady you see in his videos standing behind him. Sometimes I'd call and he'd have me talk to someone he had over, and usually they came off as pretty fucking dumb, but whatever. I'm sure Bruce remembers me, I told him my actual name back then. He used to have a place in Ballard right on 15th with a sign in front that had his name on it. Bruce may have clearly lost his mind, as evident in that flogging video, but he's actually an incredible musician, especially on guitar. There was a short time on Public Access in the later years where he would shred on a Les Paul with a Marshall. Heh, I think I actually dug up his home phone number a few years ago and called him to see if he was still alive. I mean, this guy and Public Access in the 90's in general was part of my childhood (and young adulthood), it was the least I could've done LOL

P.S. Anyone remember the name of that blind guy that used to stand there and sing these folk songs while playing acoustic guitar? He had a song that went like, "Won't you come see me, Dianna.." Lol, incidentally Bruce Howard was his musical instructor and said that he wrote that song for him to play. I hated it, but that's beside the point.

I took guitar lessons with him when I was a kid , probably 1992. He had a tiny storefront in Ballard on 15th and 77th, my mom saw the public access show, got sketched out and pulled me out right away haha. He was super weird and would whack my hands when I made mistakes, glad I made it out alive. Shout out to Goddess Kring, Kurt Cobain Was Murdered, Bong Hit Championship and all the other freaks.

I still have an old VHS tape with tidbits from Seattle Public Access tv, including Reverend Bruce. I loved Queen's Kitchen and Goddess Severina, too. One night a group of naked hippies took over the channel; I've got that, too. They kept screaming about their "revolution", but it seemed to consist of showing off their naughty bits and stir-frying while naked (bad idea!).

Please wait...
