While it was in the woman's body it was the lining of her uterus that could allow her to get pregnant. Coming out of the vagina it is a waste product that has a high concentration of blood and stains badly.

Sorry, but period blood IS gross. It's also smelly, painful, and it gets all over and ruins sheets and underwear. I don't understand why it's a feminist thing to exult your period like it's the best thing since women got the vote. Having your period sucks, and if I could get rid of mine I already would have years ago. And just because some people are grossed out by their period and don't feel sexy or want to have sex, that doesn't mean they're somehow sexually repressed. Personally, I'm fine with sex with a male partner, but there's no way in hell I'd be with a female partner if she were on her period. Guys and gals who are up for that get gold stars and I'm really glad my partner is up for it, but it's not in any way obligatory. And it's not sexist, either. If my male partner had a period I wouldn't fuck him, either. :)

@7 - Sex can be gross, smelly, and messy all by itself; doesn't make it any less wonderful. Adding a rich and bold example of womanhood doesn't have to be viewed with disgust. If one or another partner isn't into it, all can abstain. If all are onboard, then it isn't gross, it's hot. And I, for one, find that an orgasm or two can really help alleviate the discomfort.

Fortunately for me, the side effect of birth control stopping your period always seems to hit me, so I haven't had a period in a while, but I got embarrassed out of the idea of period sex. I did with my ex (who it's probably worth noting was also my first) and I did a handful of times, and he once pointed to his leg and went "It looks like ketchup!" ...and I was out. I haven't again since. But I don't judge - if it's your scene, that's cool. It's just not mine. :/

@5 - if you're a Pill-taking person, try the newer breed of progesterone only pills. In the UK the brand is Cerazette. No period at all in most cases, 12 hour window to take them in, just as effective as the others, and far less chance of thrombosis.

But although I don't find my period gross, I do find period sex requires more time in both foreplay and cleanup. It's fine if we make time for it.

Having sex with a woman during her period, has never seem like too big a deal, so long as you both can get over the sight of blood that you're not ordinarily used to seeing. I would add that my partners haven' had any of the issues mentioned by @J from Oregon. An old sheet that can be washed separately or with rags is a definite necessity.
