Great! Lets do it! im glad to see a healthy debate around this. But if this coalition isn't able to formulate a proposal and gather signatures in time for 2016 (they don't have much time left) I hope we can all come together in support of the carbon wa plan as a winnable solid first step that could set the stage for more aggressive taxes later. Seems to me that a good way to work towards climate justice is to start taxing carbon pollution as soon as possible.

It would be nice if we could also talk about nuclear power if we're really going to do anything about carbon pollution. As in, talk about like normal, informed people, not crazy folks who scream about Chernobyl or Fukushima on Facebook.

Lectures 5, 6 and 7 here are a great place to start, and you don't need any physics background to understand this.

Is anyone else curious why unions are advocating for this? Are they concerned over the environment? I have never heard of unions advocating for environmental issues before. I think this has more to do with growing union membership.

@5 watch something other than fox news, you might learn something.

Yoram Bauman, a "stand up" economist who works for Carbon WA, expressed his frustration with this perspective in a recent New York Times column. "I am increasingly convinced that the path to climate action is through the Republican Party," he told the Times' N. Gregory Mankiw. "Yes, there are challenges on the right — skepticism about climate science and about tax reform — but those are surmountable with time and effort. The same cannot be said of the challenges on the left: an unyielding desire to tie everything to bigger government, and a willingness to use race and class as political weapons in order to pursue that desire."

Everyone awake can perfectly see that the GOP carries water full time for the oligarchs who don't give a flying fuck about climate change and everyone can also perfectly see that so-called market based solutions to environmental problems are mostly about green-washing the businesses of before mentioned oligarchs who are determined to continue with business as usual.

As noted on the CarbonWA blog in September 2015, we’ve worked hard to make I-732 fair and just in how it works. In addition to cutting sales taxes, I-732 uses some of revenue to boost and fund the Working Families Tax Rebate. This amplifies the most powerful anti-poverty tool in the US: the Earned Income Tax Credit. We’re committed to I-732 increasing the justice of our world and easing the burden of climate change and fossil fuel pollution on people of all incomes, and especially those of lower incomes who are hit the hardest by fossil fuel pollution.

Communities of color and low-income communities in Washington have a key leadership role to play in fighting climate change, right in the front and center. And you’ll see us reaching out more down the road, both to describe how I-732 benefits communities of color and low-income communities and to engage more members of those communities as we push forward in fighting climate change. This fight is big, and it needs all of us.

As part of that, Executive Committee member Ramez Naam has written a terrific piece on How I-732 Fights Climate Change and Help… (Sept 16, 2015). Check it out, and spread the world on all that I-732 delivers, because we all know that social justice is a critical element of fair and effective climate policy!
