How exactly are consumers to "wise up" if they're hungry, enjoying their meal, being pleasant to the staff, tipping as local PC dictates, but through no fault of their own oblivious to the sins and depravity behind the kitchen door?

@1: I guess we could just boycott restaurants. Although that would eliminate 70% of Slog articles, and most of their advertising.

Or perhaps in the rest of their restaurant reviews, the reviewer could give each restaurant a score to indicate its pay grades, percentage of women/POC in certain positions, and general progressivity so we could know which restaurants are worth going to.

Ooh, @2 good idea! I'd love to know so I can use our dining level dollars to support establishments that are not part of the problem in our community! Maybe ROC could set up a website where employees can anonymously report on the work conditions at their particular restaurant. Or perhaps Yelp & UrbanSpoon could offer this as a feature?

Mr. Gorath's suggestion that restaurant reviews contain a brief report of how the staff is treated and compensated is very good. I think that it should be part of the Stranger's editorial policy to include this information in all restaurant reviews.

It makes a lot of sense to me that an erratic schedule would be a barrier to class mobility. I don't know what the solution to this could be because it seems a natural part of the industry and all retail in general, but I would support a solution that helps the workers.

Also, I love the idea of there being public information available on working conditions. As someone that eats out frequently in an area with SO many great options, I would be happy to choose places that offer better working conditions and I don't mind paying extra for that. And if there aren't enough people that share that opinion... well, that would suck.

We live in a wealthy city and helping marginalized people become financially empowered helps everyone. I want my children to grow up on equal footing with ALL children their age. Spending money at restaurants is a really enjoyable way to spread that wealth.

Bravo! And tipping is wrong and demeaning and arbitrary and unreliable. Why do people think its okay for a customer to pay the salary of a server instead of the server's employer who, by most estimates, is doing pretty damn well financially?

I wonder how Comet comes out in this? Are they an offender or are they one of the good guys? Are there *any* good guys in the restaurant biz?

The astroturfing by the labor groups on here is amazing. Do any real people comment anymore, or is it all labor activists? Let's see, no tipping, predictive scheduling, an "app" - all three agenda items of ROC and Working Washington. Not bad things, but come on, just be up front about who you are when pushing your agenda.

Please wait...
