DC just banned Styrofoam cups and to-go food containers. They have more Republicans, so it takes longer for them to get it.

No, no, no, no, NO. Did you read anything about report or just re-post it because it fit your pre-existing beliefs?

From NBC via the Associated Press:
http://www.nbcnews.com/science/environme…

"A major pesticide harms honeybees when used on cotton plants and citrus trees but not on other big crops like corn, berries and tobacco, the Environmental Protection Agency has found."

"Don't expect any future action on this pesticide to solve the dwindling bee problem because it's not just this pesticide alone, but a complicated puzzle that includes lack of food for bees, parasites, disease and the way different pesticides and fungicides interact, said bee expert May Berenbaum at the University of Illinois.

"Anything to reduce stress on bees is helpful," agreed University of Maryland entomologist Dennis vanEngelsdorp. "I am not convinced that neonics are a major driver of colony loss.""

@1: The current dissolution of the Republican party notwithstanding, whatever right-of-center political moniker Americans use to describe themselves as; doesn't mean they don't care about the environment or are even beekeepers and or ecologists themselves.

Name the president who created the Environmental Protection Agency.

Actually, the leaders of the evangelical community have backed efforts on global warming for a while now (NYT) and a large percentage of evangelicals vote Republican. Politics and the issues voters care about are not always parallel.

@4: yeah, i just meant that DC's following our lead with regards to stryofoam. last time i was in ATL, you could smoke indoors. I bought some groceries up north in Sedro-Wolley and they put it in a plastic bag. when we go to Coulee City we have to haul all our recycling home.

Not-Seattle just feels weird.

Raindrop @4: stop it with the "liberal Nixon" crap. He vetoed or threatened to veto the major environmental legislation of his presidency when he thought he was in a position to potentially water it down; the act that created the EPA passed the Senate unanimously and with about a dozen no votes in the house. It was created during Nixon's presidency, but Nixon himself had little to do with it.

Raindrop @6: so what? Their party is considerably worse than useless on environmental issues, and the "evangelical community" doesn't appear to care enough to change how they vote or really put any pressure on them. I don't see much reason to give them a whole lot of credit because a few of their leaders occasionally mouth some platitudes. Insofar as their votes are an important part of sustaining Republican control of congress, they're part of the problem.

@10: I am pointing out that broad generalizations that are incorrect; e.g your response "so what?". Well, facts are facts - but I have no problem with anyone bashing the Republican party.

@3: A growing body of evidence indicates that neonicotinoids cause neurological symptoms in insects in general and in bees (honeybees and native bees alike) in particular. Even if they're not the sole culprit, the evidence in favor of severely restricting them is v. strong.

@10: In regard to Nixon, the EPA was born under his presidency; despite whatever blemishes you want to detail it with - just like all things under every president the president gets credited with - including the bad.

Protect native pollinators!!! Stop invasive honey bees!!!

@14: It's a cute sentiment, but native bees can't be domesticated to pollinate on the scales that agriculture requires. Also, there are a lot of important crops, like alfalfa, that native bees simply won't pollinate at all. Not to mention, honeybees aren't really direct competitors of native bees; they nest in different environments, and farming ensures a plentiful supply of bee pasture. You might as well post:
"Protect native bison!!! Stop invasive cows!!!"

Please wait...
