I'll be watching along with Kim Davis. She's there because the SOTU address is the White House correspondents' dinner now—only without the dinner.

5:59: Chris Matthews just asked if he could say that Michelle Obama looks amazing. She does, so... you can, Chris. You already kinda did. There's an empty seat in the First Lady's box tonight—here's why:

During the State of the Union on Tuesday night, President Obama will also leave a seat open in the First Lady’s box to remember victims of gun violence like Alex “who no longer have a voice,” the White House announced this week. “There are thousands and thousands and thousands of empty seats at the holiday table every single year, and it’s just growing,” Teves said, noting that the United States loses roughly 90 people to gun violence each day. Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son Daniel was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, also knows what it’s like to have a child missing. “It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking gesture by the Obama administration to do this,” he told ThinkProgress. “Unfortunately, my family knows all about the empty seat at the table.”

And here's what Kim Davis is doing there. No word on which one of her four husbands accompanied her to Washington D.C.

6:06: Here's the president. Kissing, hugging, wishing members of Congress a happy new year, Mitch McConnell all smiles behind him. Wouldn't it be great if we could hear Obama's inner monologue? "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you. Actually nice to see you. Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you." He shakes Paul Ryan's hand. Internal monologue: "Sucks to be you, dude. Good luck with the fucking lunatics in your caucus."

6:11: Here we go! The full text of Obama's SOTU address is here, if you want to follow along at home. Obama opens with a joke, promising to keep his last SOTU short because "some of you have to get back to Iowa." Then he quickly rattles off a list of shit that needs to get done but won't get done so long as the GOP holds the House and/or the Senate: we need to fix our broken immigration system, protect kids from gun violence, give women equal pay for equal work, raise the minimum wage.

6:14: Do those two nuns in the denim wimples have their own parody twitter account yet?

6:19: Obama throws down some facts about the economy...

Let me start with the economy, and a basic fact: the United States of America, right now, has the strongest, most durable economy in the world. We’re in the middle of the longest streak of private-sector job creation in history. More than 14 million new jobs; the strongest two years of job growth since the ’90s; an unemployment rate cut in half. Our auto industry just had its best year ever. Manufacturing has created nearly 900,000 new jobs in the past six years. And we’ve done all this while cutting our deficits by almost three-quarters. Anyone claiming that America’s economy is in decline is peddling fiction.

Most Americans think the deficit increased under Obama. Not true! Not fact!

6:26: This, this, THIS:

It’s not much of a stretch to say that some of the only people in America who are going to work the same job, in the same place, with a health and retirement package, for 30 years, are sitting in this chamber. For everyone else, especially folks in their forties and fifties, saving for retirement or bouncing back from job loss has gotten a lot tougher.... That’s why Social Security and Medicare are more important than ever; we shouldn’t weaken them, we should strengthen them.

6:30: Hey, look who showed up!

6:33: Obama ramps up to his annual challenge to do something about climate change with this...

This brings me to the second big question we have to answer as a country: how do we reignite that spirit of innovation to meet our biggest challenges? Sixty years ago, when the Russians beat us into space, we didn’t deny Sputnik was up there. We didn’t argue about the science, or shrink our research and development budget. We built a space program almost overnight, and twelve years later, we were walking on the moon.

The GOP denies climate change is happening—they deny the mercury in our thermostats is up there—and Obama lays into the deniers...

Look, if anybody still wants to dispute the science around climate change, have at it. You’ll be pretty lonely, because you’ll be debating our military, most of America’s business leaders, the majority of the American people, almost the entire scientific community, and 200 nations around the world who agree it’s a problem and intend to solve it. But even if the planet wasn’t at stake; even if 2014 wasn’t the warmest year on record—until 2015 turned out even hotter—why would we want to pass up the chance for American businesses to produce and sell the energy of the future?

Translation: "There is money to be made, you dumb assholes." All thinking Republicans should be able to grasp that. So... has anyone seen a thinking Republican lately?

6:44: And here Obama accuses Congressional Republicans—and the three candidates for the GOP nomination sitting in the chamber—of doing ISIL a favor with their apocalyptic rhetoric:

But as we focus on destroying ISIL, over-the-top claims that this is World War III just play into their hands. Masses of fighters on the back of pickup trucks and twisted souls plotting in apartments or garages pose an enormous danger to civilians and must be stopped. But they do not threaten our national existence. That’s the story ISIL wants to tell; that’s the kind of propaganda they use to recruit. We don’t need to build them up to show that we’re serious, nor do we need to push away vital allies in this fight by echoing the lie that ISIL is representative of one of the world’s largest religions. We just need to call them what they are—killers and fanatics who have to be rooted out, hunted down, and destroyed.

6:52: Wouldn't It be nice if the members of Congress were the reasonable, rational people Obama does such a good job of pretending he believes they are?

6:56: Obama just attacked the GOP frontrunner...

That’s why we need to reject any politics that targets people because of race or religion. This isn’t a matter of political correctness. It’s a matter of understanding what makes us strong. The world respects us not just for our arsenal; it respects us for our diversity and our openness and the way we respect every faith.... When politicians insult Muslims, when a mosque is vandalized, or a kid bullied, that doesn’t make us safer. That’s not telling it like it is. It’s just wrong. It diminishes us in the eyes of the world. It makes it harder to achieve our goals. And it betrays who we are as a country.

6:59: Long, terrifying shot of a stony-faced Kim Davis as Obama says, "Our public life withers when only the most extreme voices get attention."

Looks like her ex-husbands were given custody of her eyebrows.

7:08: And wrapping it up...

That’s the America I know. That’s the country we love. Clear-eyed. Big-hearted. Optimistic that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. That’s what makes me so hopeful about our future. Because of you. I believe in you. That’s why I stand here confident that the State of our Union is strong.

If only this country lived up to this president's rhetoric about it.

There's a GOP response coming. But I gotta be going.
