I don't put much stock in political ads unless Sanders runs the 2016 Daisy ad against Trump or Cruz in October. And he should do that...he really should do that
2
only 2 more weeks and then we don't have to think about those particular white people for 8 years!
3
I hope Clinton counters with another 3:00 AM phone call ad using stock footage.
4
Wow. A great ad and perfect use of Simon & Garfunkel. Nostalgic without being corny. That's a tough thing to pull off.

Bernie said his musical taste ran to the classics including Abba. Trump is quoted as saying, "Fuck Abba." Should be interesting just from a musical POV if both of them are the nominees for their parties.

Forgive me for this lengthy post, and for my poor writing (i'm more of a math guy).
If any Hillary Supporters read this, I come in peace. I'd like to respectfully share a story with you all and beg that you find it in your heart to at least give Bernie some consideration.
I am a gay man who will be turning 56 this year, I am now happily married to the love of my life. I was never much of a fan of politics for obvious reasons: phony individuals trying to convince you they are fighting for you, when in reality they only care about their personal gains, and the interests of the organizations that fund them. That's besides the point. I would like to share with all of you a specific memory that I will NEVER FORGET for as long as I live. I've adopted a beautiful daughter many years ago. Let's be honest, things have come a long way, but growing up with two dads was never easy for her. I remember the excuses she would make when she would come home crying, promising that it had nothing to do with someone poking fun at her family situation (it was always about this). I remember the pain she felt, and the guilt that I felt every single day. Then I remembered the ages, when we had hope, when times started to change. It was inspiring. At the age of 13, my daughter was extremely into politics, we couldn't pull her away from CSPAN, she would literally watch it for HOURS. Truly a bright young woman. The one moment I will never forget, is when the issue of "gay marriage" was finally a being brought up. I remember he sprinting to the TV to watch the Senator from New York (Hillary Clinton) speak on her views on the issue. Sidenote: we live in New york.
My daughter was never more confident in her life that Hillary was a true liberal leader. However, as she pulled me and my partner towards the TV, this is what we heard "Marriage, is not just a bond, but a sacred bond between a man and a woman." Even typing those words just now, a tear still comes to my eye. As a FAMILY, we sat by the TV and heard this "leader" speak out against our way of life. I will NEVER forget my daughter bawling her eyes out. I remember the feeling like it was yesterday. I felt that my sexual orientation was ruining this young woman's life. That's a feeling that you cannot forget.
It's great that Hillary has come on board with the issue of marriage equality, and i am truly thankful for that! However, true courage is going against the grain. True courage means fighting for something when no one else has the guts. True courage is having your back against the wall but refusing to yield. Hillary had no courage, none at all.
So to all of the politicians that are out there trying to "win the gay vote" we see through you. We know you see us as just a statistic for a minority demographic. We know that you enjoy parading your support for us like it's something trendy or cool. But you were nowhere to be found when we needed you most. I can forgive Hillary for a lot of her flip flops (and there are indeed, A LOT), but not this. I will forever remember those words you spoke in 2004. I will forever remember the tears streaming down my daughters face, I will forever remember the shame and guilt I felt, I will forever remember the sleepless nights, and I will forever remember the time you stood against my right to the same happiness shared by others.
It's great that Hillary has evolved, but we don't need you now. We needed you then, and you snuffed us.
Let us be clear. Only one individual running for president has stood up for my rights when it really mattered. That man now stands a chance at the position that he has deserved for years. I will do everything in my power to stand with this man. My whole life I wished that others would stand up for me when the going was tough, Bernie did. Now the going seems tough for him, and I promise that I will return that favor.
If this story helped anyone out there at all. Please do me one favor. Phonebank!! Iowa is huge.
Feel the Bern friends.

If the ad was aimed at Iowa, you really can't go too heavy on minorities and expect it to be a realistic representation. Iowa is something like 96% white. What minorities there are live in Des Moines, Waterloo, Ames and Iowa City. I mean the place is really, really white. Our idea of exotic was the Chinese restaurant. (Although since I grew up across the river from Omaha, we did see black people when we went shopping. Mostly black people, as the white Omahans were afraid to come downtown)

Yup, that's Iowa: whitey whitersons. And mostly German/Swedish.
7
Thank you @5.

Yeah, it's a pretty white ad. I was checking the faces and I feel like it took about 40 seconds before I saw someone who I knew for a fact was a minority.
That doesn't change the fact that Secretary Clinton will not work for single payer, will not keep the banks and Wall Street in check, and that people HATE her if they don't like her. She's less electable in the general than Senator Sanders, and less interested in saving the republic for the people. She wants the job so bad I feel like she'd say anything to get it- and that's what I hear from her supporters on blogs, call in shows, etc- get her into office THEN she'll make it happen. So the great hope of the candidate that a lot of dems and independents have trust issues with is "we're going to tell you what you want to hear and then do what we really want when we're in office," no thanks.
If she gets the nomination, I'll have to HOLD MY NOSE while voting for her in November. In the primary, vote for who you want the most. That's what the primary is for. Voting for the lesser of two evils is what the general election is for.

GO BERNIE!
9
Dan Savage, how DARE you question the time-honored American tradition of pandering to Iowans during presidential primaries. You can't have an ad set in Harlem and expect it to convince the special snowflakes in Corn Country® you care about them and only them.
10
This "Bernie doesn't get black people" line Dan and Hillary are flogging is pretty feeble. I don't believe Hillary ever got arrested for protesting against segregated housing when she was in college. What exactly has she done for black people? She only polls well with African-American voters because of her husband. Once Sanders starts running ads in South Carolina and Georgia you'll see a lot more brown faces.
11
So what are people going to do with their investments under a Bernie administration? Just sit on them. You couldn't sell any stocks without a big hit. And why buy any? America's 401Ks, IRAs will be in purgatory until the next Republican is elected.
12
@11- I remember when the Right was predicting economic doom if Obama got elected. Turns out the rich did better than everyone else and everyone else did much better than they did when W was slashing taxes and spending wildly (abroad, because spending government money in your own country is communism, evidently).
13
@5, Really nice.
14
Thanks for that moment of reality @12
15
David Brock, the head of a Hillary Clinton super PAC, told AP today that "From this ad it seems black lives don't matter much to Bernie Sanders."

Fun fact: Twenty-five years ago it was Brock tried to destroy Anita Hill, a distinguished African-American law professor. He later was forced to apologize for his lies about her. Today, he is lying about Sen. Sanders.

Another fun fact: Zaid Jilani from The Intercept reported that the Clinton campaign gave $275,615 to David Brock's Super PAC for alleging "black lives don't matter much" to Bernie.
16
Yes, thank you @5
17
@5 Your story is from 2004? You know Sanders was against gay marriage at least as late as 2006, right?

http://tinyurl.com/zaxpx9n

Asked whether Vermont should legalize full marriage rights for same-sex couples, he said: "Not right now, not after what we went through." - June 07,2006
18
@14 and 12: The questions still remain. BernieSanders.com does not discuss the federal tax rates, capital gains, etc. Only estate taxes and social security taxes are addressed.

Such questions do not just come from the wealthy, but for every worker who has been contributing to their investment vehicles for decades.

He drones on and on about income inequality, busting up the big banks, and I'm not saying that a large part of that isn't valid. But he glides over specifics about the economy and wants the USA to follow northern Europe's lead. No thank you.

But as long as you feel the bern, and not think the bern, is what he and the "social democrats" are counting on.
20
raindrop, just curious, have you ever been to Copenhagen, Oslo or Stockholm?
21
@20 - No, but I am paraphrasing Bernie when he referred to northern Europe or Scandinavia as a model in the first debate. They're beautiful cities and wonderful people; and what works for them will not necessarily work for us.
22
@20: Don't forget Helsinki!
23
Raindrop:
Bernie supported the gay rights movement 32 years ago (http://www.queerty.com/32-years-before-m…), 20 years ago (https://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes/1…), and continues to be supportive today.
In 1995, Bernie aggressively defended the human dignity of LGBT members of the military, publicly and on the House floor, after a Republican had made a snide remark about "homos in the military."
Bernie also supports adoption by same-sex couples. In 1999 (7 years prior), Bernie voted against an amendment that would have prevented same-sex couples in Washington D.C. from adopting children.

Sanders helped approving civil unions. Vermont was at the forefront of this huge political achievement a decade and a half ago and widely hailed by progressive gay rights advocates. With Vermonters already having civil unions, yes, he decided not push for gay marriage, but it does not mean Bernie is not for it.
So to sum up, you need to put that comment in historical context. Otherwise, it's using a modern lens to say Sanders was progressive enough because he wasn't a time traveler.
24
@23 - I think that should be addressed to @17 cdg, not raindrop.

But raindrop (dear), believe me, we should be so lucky as to have our cities as well run as any of those 4. The cops aren't doing sweeps of homeless encampments. Neighbours aren't up in arms about drug use in RVs in their back yards. We should be so lucky.
25
Slerifera,
Yes, should be @17.
My bad!
26
Lets hope Her Royal Clinton keeps going negative and drives her numbers even lower
27
"He decided not push for gay marriage, but it does not mean Bernie is not for it."

Yup. There's a clear distinction between prioritixing what you're going to fight for first and flip-flopping. He said "Not right now," not "No."
28
If anyone is interested in researching actual votes, positions, etc. of the candidates I recommend VoteSmart.org.

29
The NH Primary and IA Caucus are coming up. What if they used actual footage from NH and IA? I've been in all 99 counties in Iowa and all 10 in New Hampshire. I didn't see any scenes that appear be from anywhere else. Especially in the more iconic settings (dairy farms, rural small towns), you see almost all white faces. The only reason you'd see as many POCs as that video shows are if one was in Des Moines or Portsmouth, on a college campus, and/or at a political rally for a progressive candidate.

I realize "Sanders video shows representative numbers of different races" isn't a very click-baity headline. But it would be accurate.

And thanks for your story, @5.
30
@18- The median household income is $54,000. The average worker is not invested in the stock market. The average worker is planning on working until they can't anymore and then living as best they can on Social Security and family help.

" But he glides over specifics about the economy and wants the USA to follow northern Europe's lead. No thank you."

No thank you to stability, prosperity, and democracy? What is wrong with you?
32
I'm with @6. I grew up in Ames, and what minorities we had were students at Iowa State. This ad doesn't tell me what Bernie doesn't care about minorities, it just reminds me (as it's been 20 years since I moved away) just how *white* Iowa is.

Please wait...
