I don't know the demographics, but having visited Sag Harbor and the area around it each year for the last 10 years, I'm not sure I've ever seen a black person there. :/ or ?:Z
I'd put a dollar down that he just showed up in Sag Harbor, the locals saw him and started filming (whoa, a black dude! or whoa, a black dude, watch his every move...), then he started with his book talk , picked up the clips off You Tube and edited it all together.
I'd put a dollar down he has fictionalized the real black seaside colony at Oak Bluffs, MA in a new setting, and he's spoofing us all on You Tube.
I do not think AA families in NYC in that era paid $50-75,000 in rent for summer homes in Sag Harbor, or anywhere out on Long island for that matter, nor did they let their teenage kids hang out there all week without the parents.
And wtf w/ no dead bodies all summer? Hardly worth writing about.
My god. Even the New York Times is in on it. They've fabricated names, and dates, and invented books and authors to cite. It's like a Borges story come to life.
I love Whitehead too, and feel that he has as of yet done no wrong in his literary career. But Paul, when has an overly loving (or overly hateful) prior opinion ever stopped a Stranger staffer from writing a review?
Put down your Coors Lights, walk out of Murph's Tavern and make a right on 114. Go 3/4 of a mile and make a left into any one of the next 5 streets. You will see black people there. Lots of them. People who pay $50-75,000 for a summer home.
I've spent the last 22 summers in Sag Harbor. I was there in 1987 goofing around with a group of black boys whose parents where working in the city. One of the boys was a skinny kid with glasses named Chip Whitehead.

You each owe me a dollar.
