Magus is definitely one of the best used bookstores in town, no questions asked. They also don't screw you when you're selling (or at least, they didn't used to).
Magus is the best. I've never been to Spine & Crown, because I never get up to Capitol Hill. I should make the effort. Their blog is a fun read, or was when they used to update it.
I went to Magus for the first time last weekend, I usually frequent Spine & Crown or Twice-Sold Tales on Capitol Hill since they are closer to downtown.
I will definitely be making the trip out to Magus more frequently. Friendly and helpful staff and they had both titles I was looking for (84 Charing Cross Road, and The Scarlett Letters, which I decided to pick up after reading the posts on SLOG). Good times!
Thanks for the plug, Paul. Magus IS the single best shop in town. I worked there for years and would never deny it. However, it should be remembered that they have a permanent captive audience as far as customers go - UW students and faculty. Couple that with their sweetheart lease, and you can figure that Magus Books will still be there when all of us are dead. In that case, it makes sense to spread the love around, if you take my meaning. Hope that doesn't come off catty - it's not meant that way. I love Magus and give them money regularly.
As for our blog, it was a lot of fun to do, but also a lot of work. Getting better results from Facebook, at the moment. Come be our fan!
Thanks for the props Paul. I rang you up yesterday but didn't realize it was you until I glanced at the credit card slip. We don't rest on our laurels at Magus and know we have to work hard every day to bring in the good books, paying well for them, and selling them to our loyal customers. We do have a great base of customers from the U and currently a good lease. But with not much time left before renewal I'm sure a rent raise is in our future. And do please go to Kris at Spine & Crown--the guy lives and breathes books and has a great wealth of knowledge, and of course, amazing books!
Never heard of Spine and Crown, I'll check it out.
