The Library at University of Michigan has set up a beautiful virtual replica of the first volume of Audubon's
The Birds of America. Ordinarily,
I don't give a shit about birds (for what I think are
good reasons,) but I can't stop flipping through this book and admiring it.
I hope that other libraries are working on stuff like this; I'd love to be able to flip through beautiful old books online whenever I wanted. Many of the older books in library collections are fragile and can't stand up to repeated use. This is an elegant solution.
