People still use LiveJournal?
2
Swiping somebody's content is stupid. Pissing off the entire internet is REALLY FUCKING STUPID. She's never going to be able to use Facebook again, for one thing; I'll bet she's got a hundred thousand death threats in her inbox.
3
Boy. That's going to be ugly. I wish there were some way I could watch.
4
Fnarf, how do you know the editor of Cooks Source is a woman?
5
Doing what for 3 decades? Plagiarism?

Also, everything on the web is public domain?
6
@4, the name of the editor is Judith.
7
@4, it says so in the article, and I've seen her Facebook page. Judith Griggs, aka J.D. Griggs. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1…

She's in bigger trouble than just this now. Some folks have been going through her articles and finding the sources. Not just random small potatoes food bloggers, but Martha Stewart, CNN, Disney, NPR, Food Network.... Them folks have lawyers. She's soon to find herself in a world of hurt.

See https://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=1…

Plagarizing random stuff on 'net: stupid.

Plagaizing stuff from NPR and Foodnetwork.com, folks with legal departments: weapons-grade stupid.

Never mind facebook; she's going to be in court soon.
9
how uncool. i mean all monica wanted was a small donation to a school of journalism. this could had been good PR

public relations = fail

This showcases two of the problems that will continue to multiply as professional journalism decreases and amateur blogs take over:
1. Rampant plagiarism
2. Amazingly unprofessional responses to requests to cease rampant plagiarism.
11
@10, the thief has worked in publishing for 30 years, long before blogs. She publishes a paper magazine. It's the professionals who are in the wrong here, not the blogger.
12
@11,

Has the Internet merely facilitated people finding out about her thievery or is she getting lazy in her old age?

@14 ftw.

These cowcases too, of the problems that will continue to two-ply as professional journalism depleases and auteur blogs take over:

1. Ram pants plague

2. Amazingly unprofessional responses to requiems to cease ram pants plague.

oops, forgot my citation.

Turtle, Tortoise. http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Comme…, 2010.

That'll be $20 for the editing job, btw.
19
Smart Bitches, Trashy Books is doing a Googlebomb of Judith Griggs: Google her, then click on the link to the SBTB definition.
20
I say we all declare that copyright dies after 17 years and anything that's been in print or published on the net longer than that is public domain.

They can't stop us.

They can only complain bitterly as we ignore them.
21
@2 except Burma. They weren't on the Internet today.

@12 for the insightful win. Sucks to be Fnarf.
22
Wow - she's certainly getting her 10 minutes of fame today. Too bad it'll end up costing her everything bud the clothes on her back.

On second thought, nah, not too bad at all. What a scumbag.
23
Wow, if she really has been the editor of Connecticut Woman Magazine she should probably know that Housatonic (as in the Housatonic River, which flows through the state of CT and a portion of western MA) is spelled with an 'a' and not an 'i'. Duh.
24
@20, leave it to Will to not understand a word of what's going on and be the only person defending this idiot woman's actions.
25
@ 18 FTW.

"ram pants plague" - ha!
26
It's on New York Times, and oh yes The Guardian.

This woman will never work in the publishing industry again.
27
From whats been said so far, Martha Stewart, CNN, NPR, and Food Network should be the least of this moron's worries.
Given the parent company for a large percentage of the above is none other than the Rat (aka Disney), she'd better book a flight on the first shuttle outta this star system.
Unca Walt don't take kindly to being ripped off.

Current (as of 2005hrs PDT) FB status of Cooks (sic) Source Magazine:

Well, here I am with egg on my face! I did apologise to Monica via email, but aparently it wasnt enough for her. To all of you, thank you for your interest in Cooks Source and Again, to Monica, I am sorry -- my bad! You did find a way to get your "pound of flesh..." we used to have 110 "friends," we now have 1,870... wow!

Best to all, Judith

This woman's brains are in her cojones.
29
@27: I dunno, I bet Martha Stewart is one fucking warped sadist. I wouldn't want to piss her off.
30
Aargh!! Similar thing happened to me.

Anyone who steals from a website deserves whatever internet fallout they get.

Everyone should be aware of Creative Commons http://creativecommons.org/ and also to copyright their blog or other internet sites pronto.

The internet is public domain. If you don't like it, create a pay wall, create an account verification wall, create a java wall against copy+paste assholes, backup the page into a php file a keep all the data off site so even if they look at the source it's just calling the article you stored in the server and they can't do that, make the article into a picture that's write protected, e-mail the picture only to the people you want to see the information.

We have all the tools we need to protect ourselves from IP theft, and it's about damn time these IP nuts take control that which they seem to put such a high value on. Learn the technology then come back to me and complain when someone trains a monkey to type our your fancy pay wall picture article.
32
What this situation needs is more "my bad".
33
@28: Either by saying "cojones" you are referring to ovaries, or you need to brush up on your Spanish...
34
@31: Or, better yet, just have your lawyers sue the fuckwits into oblivion. Because the internet isn't public domain, all your kicking and screaming notwithstanding. Don't believe me? Just ask Napster.
35
@13, 14,

Nice!
36
Sigh. You know, these the problems of 1. rampant plagiarism, and 2. amazingly unprofessional responses to requests to cease rampant plagiarism; will continue to multiply as professional journalism decreases and amateur blogs take over.

Please wait...
