I'm sorry to see him go. Like many, I'm familiar with him through TAL, where I've always found him to be one of the most distinctive and clever voices on the show.
I am terribly sorry he is gone. Such a loss for gay culture in America too. Too few gay men worth a damn survived to our age. Rakoff helped a post-epidemic audience (whose leaders mostly got wiped out) cultivate a renewed appreciation for a sophisticated comic sensibility. God damn cancer.
I always thought Rakoff was the best of the This American Life crowd. Long after that clique got maudlin and precious, David remained grumpy and wry.
Wiretap on the other hand has always been awful and even he couldn't save it.
I nearly ran off the road from laughing the weekend before last listening to him and Jonathan Goldstien reading his story consisting of letters between Gregor Samsa and Dr. Seuss. Just brilliant.

47 is so young, too. Crud.
RIP, Rakoff, thank you for Freud.

He will be greatly missed.
