Paul Muldoon and the Question of the Lyric

Robert Hunter wrote great lyrics for the Grateful Dead. I think many of his lyrics can stand alone as poems. Don't get me wrong, the music of the Grateful Dead was powerful enough (on the good nights...) that great lyrics weren't necessary to carry the songs. But, the lyrics to many of the songs are very interesting, evocative, and stick with you long after the music has faded. They make you think, or ponder, which is at least one of the elements of good poetry.

Here is an example of Robert Hunter disassembling the lyrics to Franklin's Tower.
