Identity politics isn't killing democracy. Republicans are.

Ahhh, socialism. Because eventually you will run out of other people's money.

Whether your ideology is based on the supremacy of whites or that whites are inherently oppressive, your ideology is based on a destructive and divisive form of identity politics. Barack Obama managed to win two elections without stirring racial division. He stood against racism in all its forms, not "old white men." The Democrats would gain a great deal from his example.

Universal health care and free college certainly ameliorate, but are in no way a substitute for, the loss of family-wage jobs. And the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend is about $2,000 per capita. Again, in no way a substitute for a family-wage job.

"Barack Obama managed to win two elections without stirring racial division"

Yet racial divisions were stirred none-the-less. We're still waiting for the whitey tape, right?

5

The mistake is getting caught up in the Presidents nationalism trope. His Administration is pushing economic nationalism. The white nationalism Trump flirts with is a countermeasure to fill the media landscape. It feeds the loud extremes who love to play the game of who is the racist. The actual agenda is plain old isolationist and protectionism. Stop punching air.

Hey, Rich -- I haven't read the book, but the fact that Schumer offered Trump money for his big beautiful wall hardly negates the fact that a bazillion people on the left declare a frank desire to "ABOLISH ICE". If you want to abolish ICE, you're for open borders. Given that, Fukiyama's generalization is more credible than you make it sound, and associating him with Trump on that score may have been an intellectually dishonest smear.

7

@6 - How do you figure? We had border controls before ICE was created. We could have them after its abolished as well.

Don't you think people who favored open borders would just say "I favor open borders"? What's the point of them saying it in a sooper seekrit code? Especially when cunning folks like you could see right through it?

"Abolish ICE" is about an agency that puts children in cages. We can have border controls without relying on the rabble of sadists and thugs that ICE has assembled over the past few years.

@2: "Barack Obama managed to win two elections without stirring racial division. He stood against racism in all its forms, not "old white men." The Democrats would gain a great deal from his example."

How are you posting on Slog, if you're only 2 years old? Clearly you were not alive during the Obama administration, or you'd know better about how conservatives reacted to his very centrist policies and attempts to work with the GOP, even when the Dems had a supermajority.

@6: Since ICE has only existed since 2003, does that mean you believe the US had entirely open borders for the ~200 preceding years?

"Ahhh, socialism. Because eventually you will run out of other people's money."

The world largest welfare program... you probably know it as the "US Military"... won't be running out of cash any time soon. We can afford to put some of that cash aside for paving a few roads and feeding some kids.

"paving a few roads and feeding some kids."

Thanks for the giggle, but you passed that bridge in about 1920, and are now racing down towards free college, free pre-school, free after-school, free health care, free housing, free transit...... oh, and guaranteed "free money" (aka the basic wage).

Taking care of widows, the crippled and orphans is where we should have stopped.

Everything is freeeee!!!!!!! As long as someone actually pays for it.
