The United States' early offers of religious tolerance attracted a lot of commune-like religious cults throughout the colonies. Some were even "free-love" and "gender equal" cults. LDS is one of those early American cults that has managed to firmly plant its roots.

I'd argue $cientology is the most thoroughly "Made in the USA" cult that money can buy. But it's definitely a toss-up re: who has the more interesting lore/cosmology since both involve outer space and non-earthly entities.
