Bleh, thought Azzarello's The Joker was totally boring and was a lame attempt to ride in on The Dark Knight's success. The Joker's aspirations were so entirely ordinary that it just because a generic crime thriller, and a mediocre one at that.

Bermejo has some beautiful splashes but his character redesigns followed Azzarello's bad instincts. Riddler's tribal tattoos were especially ridiculous, and overall the reinventions served little purpose. Turning Harley Quinn into a voiceless stripper is a uselessly lame misogynist move for one, and second having the Joker crying in her lap was a schlockly attempt at "adult" characterization.

I thought it was poorly conceived and executed throughout, and would tell folks to save their $20.

Scalped... DMZ... Hellblazer... Northlanders... Fables... 100 Bullets...

Yeah, Vertigo is just a Gaiman-fueled wankfest. That, or the reviewer doesn't actually read comics that often. I'm guessing it's the latter.

Of course "House of Mystery" is based off "Sandman". If you're not okay with that going in, then why'd you bother? I wouldn't say it's an amazing read so far, but at least I accepted the premise as a valid starting point.

"Hellblazer" was a genuine exception to a lot of this. With 250+ issues under its belt though, the quality has wavered somewhat. From the generally excellent Jamie Delano era to the overuse of booze, priestfucking and piss jokes in Ennis' run and Brian Azarello's disastrous (Oh god..the dog) bullshit, you have to pick and choose. Plus the general obsession with writer-to-writer contuinity leads to a lot of confusion and makes it a bit inacessible.

Personally I think "Lucifer" salvaged this legacy and did a damn good job from start to finish.

Oh, and "Northlanders" kicks ass in a "Viking Deadwood" sort of way but you have to be interested in that area of history for it to grab you. I meet a lot of people who just. Don't. Care.
