How Do You Want to Spend Your Summer Vacation?

I'm about 2/3 into The Passage. I haven't read a genre piece in a really long time. This book reminds me why. As Paul states, the characters are thin. While the writing does service the plot well, that's about it. There is very little thematically going on here other than weak references to parental responsibility. For something post-apocalyptic, the inhabitants sure have a good sense of pre-apocalyptic morality. Disappointing to find out its only the first in a series.
I was incredibly interested by Witz until I read the extract. Can't wrap my mind around it, unfortunately; I'm a bit simple when it comes to language.
