MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4 This week of rooftop freak-outs, rocking caucuses, and Metro-based child abuse kicks off with yet another episode of ridiculous violence on Seattle's Capitol Hill. Today's story was officially set in motion last night, when a 53-year-old Auburn man was walking near the intersection of 13th Avenue and East Madison Street. Around 8:30 p.m., the man was accosted by three younger men, who asked for money then attacked. According to police reports obtained by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Auburn man was struck in the head, knocked to the ground, and kicked repeatedly before his assailants fled. Not until this morning did the Auburn man realize he'd also been shot, when the bullet lodged in his foot caused the extremity to swell and drove the man to seek care at Seattle's Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The mugged-and-shot man is recovering, his assailants remain at large, police are investigating.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5 In lighter news: Today brought some newsworthy hubbub to Seattle's Temple De Hirsch Sinai, the synagogue located at 15th Avenue and East Pike Street, where just after 3:00 p.m., bystanders began phoning police to report a twentysomething woman wigging out on the roof. According to witnesses, this wigging out involved hollering, waving a knife, and throwing things off the roof toward the parking lot (where the woman's boyfriend was reportedly standing and watching the show). When police arrived, the visibly distressed woman attempted to flee down the temple's chimney, only to get lodged inside. Firefighters took to the chimney with sledgehammers, police took the rescued woman into custody, and everyone went about their Super Tuesday business.

•• Meanwhile in the South: A deadly conglomeration of tornadoes tore through Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas, wrecking everything and killing at least 48 people.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6 Speaking of hellish American destruction: Today brings a dreaded but necessary update on Britney Spears, the troubled pop princess/human object lesson released today from the UCLA Medical Center after her second involuntary hospitalization in 30 days. For an inside look at the uncommitted Britney's shambolic daily life, we turn to court papers filed by mother Lynne Spears in support of a temporary restraining order granted against Britney's controversial friend/Svengali Sam Lutfi. In the papers—obtained by the Smoking Gun—Mama Spears shares her experience of the night of January 28, when she witnessed Lutfi's diabolical lording over Britney firsthand. According to the court papers, Lutfi's deeds ranged from verbal abuse (calling Britney "an unfit mother, a piece of trash, and a whore") to drugging (with Lutfi allegedly spiking Britney's drinks with ground-up prescription pills). After watching her daughter down a drink served by Lutfi, Lynne Spears wrote, "Britney then became very agitated and could not stop moving. She cleaned the house. She changed her clothes many times. She also changed her three dogs' clothes many times. Britney spoke to me in a tone and with the level of understanding of a very young girl." Dear God: Please allow Britney Spears to be in a serious but nonfatal automobile accident, as a few months in full-body traction may be the only thing that can save her. Amen.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7 Speaking of women besieged: Today brings the galling story of the woman known only as Yara, the 37-year-old American businesswoman who made international headlines after being thrown in a Saudi Arabian jail for sitting with a male colleague at a Saudi Arabian Starbucks. Details come from the London Times, to whom Yara (who does not want her last name published for fear of retribution) gave her first postarrest interview. As she told the Times, Yara's ordeal began with a routine visit to the new Riyadh offices of her finance company. When the office's electricity temporarily cut out, Yara and her colleagues—all men—went to a nearby Starbucks to use its wireless internet. Despite sitting in a curtained booth in the cafe's "family" area—the one place where men and women are allowed to mix—Yara and a male colleague were accosted by members of Saudi Arabia's Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which strictly prohibits public contact between unrelated men and women. "They asked 'Why are you here together?'" Yara told the Times. "I explained about the power being out in our office. They got very angry and told me what I was doing was a great sin." Soon after, Yara was hauled to Malaz prison in Riyadh, where she was interrogated, strip-searched, and forced to sign and fingerprint a series of confessions pleading guilty to her "crime." Eventually she was taken before a judge: "He said 'You are sinful and you are going to burn in hell.' I told him I was sorry. I was very submissive. I had given up. I felt hopeless." Fortunately, Yara's husband—a prominent businessman—was able to secure her release from prison, but the couple and their children have no plans of leaving Saudi Arabia. "If I want to make a difference, I have to stick around," said Yara to the Times. "I can't just surrender to the terrorist acts of these people. If I leave, they win."

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8 Speaking of sanctioned abuse: Today brings a bracing report from Hot Tipper Cate, who was riding the #49 Metro this afternoon when she was confronted by every decent citizen's nightmare. "There was a little boy riding with an elderly woman and bugging the crap out of her—whining, crying, and carrying on. The woman was yelling at him then picked him up and started to shake him. Thankfully, a man sitting across from the woman intervened, telling her, 'You'd better put that kid down.' The old woman then started yelling at the dude, and he yelled back. Then the driver came back and, after verifying that the child was the woman's great-grandson, reprimanded the guy who intervened! It was surreal. The driver told the man to mind his own business or get off the bus. The baby-shaking granny smugly seconded the injunction, and the rest of us were too shocked to do anything. Apparently, Metro's fine with child abuse, so long as it's done by relatives."

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9 Nothing happened today, unless you count Barack Obama's stunning sweep of the Washington State, Louisiana, Nebraska, and U.S. Virgin Islands caucuses.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10 The week ends with an impressive protest on the streets of Seattle and 50 other cities across the world. Organized by the internet group Anonymous, today's protests targeted the Church of Scientology, with masked protestors decrying the church's fascist practices. Outside the Washington State Scientology headquarters on Aurora Avenue North, a group of 50 to 75 costumed protestors stood along both sides of the street, chanting and waving signs reading "Scientology Kills." As Anonymous participants told KING 5, "We believe in total freedom of belief. We have nothing against the people of Scientology, however the Church of Scientology has committed crimes. They're vehemently anti-opposition. Anyone who opposes them must go down." Hurrah for Anonymous, boo for Scientology, yay for the end of the week. recommended
