I also support a blinded, randomized, controlled trial on the flu vaccine. Weirdly, the only reason you can ethically do such a study is that the evidence for the efficacy of the flu vaccine is so weak. For vaccines whose efficacy is really solidly established, like the one for polio, it would be unethical to do a study in which half the participants got a placebo shot. Science, do you understand NIH/vaccine politics? Why _hasn't_ such a flu vaccine study been done in recent years?

yeah seriously people, stay the hell home when your sick! especially you service industry folks. lay off the macho and lay on your bed, at home, away from me. thank you.

@2 Newsflash! very few people want to go to work when they're sick, most of the people who do go to work sick have jobs where unplanned time off is hard to get and sickdays aren't covered. A lot of us are women and being 'macho' isn't really a part of it.
As a server it's not like I want to be at work taking care of people who spout 'clever' slogans when I have a fever, but when it's a choice of losing my job and not being able to pay my bills or maybe getting a stranger sick, well, I'll do my best to not cough at your table or drip snot into your food.
If you don't like it take it up with the owners of your favorite restaurants and support unions.

You are being misleading by saying that we don't have "good evidence" for the flu vaccine's effectiveness, since it isn't quite clear what you mean, but it certainly isn't the case that placebo controlled double blind trials are epistemologically privileged in any robust way.

@3 I agree that it's a shitty situation and that you don't really have a choice, but it doesn't make you any less of an asshole. Sometimes the only thing you can do is acknowledge your assholery and get on with life rather than try to defend it.
6
hey 5,
really? asshole? 3 times?
OK, I never claimed not to be so here you go: It's annoying to be told to 'just stay home when you're sick' like that didn't cross my fucking mind. I really don't want to go to work sick, I don't want to make others sick, the whole thing sucks and schmucks that spout stupid half-witty slogans that attempt to sum up real and complicated circumstances can go fuck themselves. If it were up to me sickleave for serviceworkers would be the norm but society's priorities aren't my decision, I'm just an asshole with a shitty job right? We have all made the choice for slightly less expensive food in leiu of health benefits for cooks and servers, but yeah, I'm the asshole.
Sorry I hurt your precious little feelings, that's what assholes do.

What 6 said. The reality - especially right now - is that most food service is running under labor with no cushion if someone gets sick. And you are also made aware how many thousands of people want your job. If we made a law saying restaurant owners MUST give time off for employees with a fever or cough (as opposed to the current mandate, which only backs us up in case of diaherrea or vomiting) we'd all be better off. Believe me, no one wants to serve your self-righteous ass while we feel miserable.

Please wait...
