Desperately Seeking Sasquatch!

Angry Beaver agrees with and feels everything in this rant.

I feel his/her pain but "Second, I thought true lovers of art and music believed that it should be accessible to everyone?" makes me chuckle at the naivety. Music, art, festivals, it's all business. While it relates back to money primarily, there may have been some other factors in the decision:

Maybe the festival was over-selling one day and underselling others so they did this to even out the audience, or appease acts that were scheduled to off-days. Maybe they had to make a deal with the local government or owner of the campgrounds. Maybe there was a tax incentive or some other incentive for the change.

Maybe the promoters simply didn't make enough money in the past to make the festival worth putting on unless the change was made.

Instead of taking it as a personal attack you could email the promoters and ask, or try to prod a journalist to do it, or start a petition to try to convince the promoters that they've made a mistake.

Poor Anon. Still idealistic.

It gets better when you accept that people with money want nothing but more money and the emotions the rest of us saps feel towards art is a really easy way to exploit us.

Just relax. You're going to have a good life. You'll see the bands you love somewhere way better than the shitshow that has become Sasquatch. And you won't pay people for a bad product (unless you can afford it, I gather); that's important too.

1st: really? only 4 day tickets? that is some real bullshit. This is a good one for the Stranger to print, because it really is absolute crap, whatever the reasons the promotors cite.

2nd: @2,3 typical comment board tripe. a totally legit complaint and you feel the need to instead bash the post. neither of you can relate at all?

"Nope, it's wednesday! that means its time for me to preach and poke holes in the new I,Anon!"

FUCKING LAME. but I'll "just relax" like mtnlion says too. "it gets better when you accept that...." blah blah blah....

YEAH ANON, JUST ACCEPT IT YOU IDEALISTIC JERKFACE!!! totally the point of this column.
5
Concert promoters care about "art & music"? Knock me over w/ a feather.
6
Wait... No one cheated on anyone? No incredible body odor? No domestic abuse? No cocaine-snorting boss stories? No asshole customers / baristas?

WHAT IS THIS SHIT?
7
I don't feel like I'm entitled to see anything and believe concert promoters can do whatever they want. That said, I did find this new 4 day pass structure kind of lame. I'm just disappointed in general that now the great state of Washington doesn't have a good LARGE festival anymore. It's just disappointing.

A silver lining would be for the Bumbershoot folks to dislodge their heads from their asses and finally make that something worth seeing. Change the venue or hire the company that puts together ACL or Coachella or something.. anything! Bumbershoot needs to capitalize on this fuck up by Sasquatch.

This shit brought to you by corporate greed.

@7 (& @8): Great idea!!! Hey, Bumpershoot organizers----are you reading this?
10
@4, Firstly, that is *exactly* what this column is for. People complain and then the Slog commenters argue over whether the complaint is legit. Secondly, you purposely misinterpreted my first comment. I said nothing so scathing. Maybe a little condescending, but that's because I do find this complaint overly emotional, naive, and ineffective.

When you let your blood boil because someone wants more money than you have for a service you misguidedly feel is essential to your life, I think that "relax" is a decent suggestion.

I'm fine with venting, but this rant sounded way too offended by the capitalism imposed on a festival that Anon goes onto castigate, anyway.
11
Honey, everybody else found out about your little music festival and the organizers have to find some way of keeping out all the riff-raff. Guess which side of the tracks you landed on?
12
"Tell me, what is accessible about a $337 pass, plus whatever "convenience" fees are tacked on?"

It includes the cost of all the MP3s and FLACs you downloaded from the artists.
13
@4 oh, growler. You may just be too gentle for the interent if you think my post was "bashing".
14
I was thrilled at the idea of a 4-day pass until I found out that:

(a) I'd be shelling out an extra $100 for camping even though I'll never have any intention of actually camping at the Gorge, and

(b) the full festival pass for all four days is now a bracelet you're stuck with rather than a package of tickets for each day that you could split with friends.

The additional day - going from 3 days to 4 days - seemed like a reasonable price change when you took out the $100 for camping. Now it's just a rip-off. Fuck you, Live Nation.
15
Yeah this is lame. I'm too old to endure 4 days of torturous hell camping in that parking lot. In the past I'd go up for a day or and camp off site.
Also, agree with the other people about bumbershoot. They need to get their act together and fire whoever is putting on the thing. It has such potential to be a great music weekend, but it gets shittier with each passing year.
16
Here in Alabama, we have a fest that does the same --- Hangout Festival. Those not from here think it sounds wonderful, a few days of music on the beach. In reality, it's grueling heat with all ocean breezes blocked off and baking sun... plus, you cannot buy a day pass!! No good.
17
Well, let's see.

Coachella-3 days $350
Sasquatch-4 days $350
ACL-3 days $225
Bumbershoot-3 days $99 or 1 day $29

Should Bumbershoot charge at least $225 for 3 day passes like the above mentioned, and eliminate the single day pass?

If everyone was willing to spend $225 to see Bumbershoot, rather than $99 or 29 bucks for a day, we could then compare apples to apples.

Conrad, let's say you now run the festival. What do you do to create a "great music weekend"?
18
If you camp in one of the honey buckets you can save money on a tent. And no messing with tent flaps when bud light pee pee time wakes you up.
19
We all went to the Gorge for Lollapalooza to see Sonic Youth, Pavement, Sinéad O'Connor, Hole, Cypress Hill...We all got SUNBURNED THROUGH OUR WHITE T-SHIRTS. And after the show, a bunch of idiots lit fireworks in the dry-grass parking area just in time for a few fights to break out between some ape-like yutzes.

Yeah, let's stay overnight for a couple of days. We'll drink $5 water and go third-world native.

Fuck that.
20
I Anonymous seems to have lost its way, or at least its original purpose. Why does a complaint like this one (Sasquatch policies) need to be anonymous? It's hardly the sort of lurid, personal, gossipy drama that used to inspire pretty much all of this column's published submissions. The column needs to revert to its hipster-Jerry Springer roots. I want a return to the public shaming of mega-pricks and assholes by people who are too embarrassed or passive-aggressive or even just prudent to go public with their ax-grinding. All the recent public-policy whining just shouldn't be the meat of an I Anonymous column.
21
why is this anon? afraid they gonna blackball you at squatch? grow a pair and put your name on this....and boo to stranger for running this; really, nothing better in the pile to use?
22
Are you kidding me?? You're upset over the fees? How about being mad about having a line up the mostly consists of skinny white hipster boy bands? I mean come on... Save your money and invest in better music.
23
@18 - How about pick a direction and go with it? Right now they have a random mix of bands that doesn't satisfy anyone. And seriously - acts like Tony Bennett or Hall and Oates as a headliner, They shouldn't be top billed at a festival. If anything I would want it booked similarly to the FF Fest in Austin.
24
Oh how I miss that little venue at the Champs de Brionne Winery. Long before MCA bought the venue and turned it into a human stockyard. Live Nation or whoeverthefuck owns the place now had made one of the most beautiful places to see live music one of the most inhospitable and expensive shit shows ever. Here's to hoping the Maryhill venue can attract some good shows. Saw possibly one of the best Dylan shows I'd ever seen there and would absolutely go back.
25
All the yuppie pricks sequestered at Sasquatch will have ample cash to buy my 18 wheeler full of malt liquor and cocaine. Banzai!!!!
26
First, to 20 & 21 and everyone that complains every week about someone writing something that didn't need to be anonymous - THERE IS NO NON-ANONYMOUS version of this column in the Stranger. You can't send in a rant with your name on it and have them print it.

Second, to anyone bitching about music festivals being overpriced (and they all are) STOP GOING. Quit supporting the greedy assholes that put them on. (Plus the lineup this year is terrible).

And lastly, if you don't go, you'll save hundreds of dollars you can spend on COCAINE and MALT LIQUOR!

Please wait...
