Don't do a real pumpkin on your head. I did it once and while it looked pretty cool (I was a scare crow with a pumpkin head) you can't hold a conversation with anyone, your voice just stays in the pumpkin and is really really loud to you and non existent to the person outside. And... it is hard to drink beverages. Come to think of it, it might be the perfect costume for someone who doesn't drink and just wants to be stoned and not talk to anyone!
