Racism Hurts Everyone

Comments

1
There's no context. "Racism in sports?" Pro, con? Not sexy? Does Anon, demand all interaction with baristas be sexy, flirty? Is that sexual harrassment?
2
P.S. Anon, You're the one who started talking about work. That's not flirty, that's small talk.
3
I don't get it. Was the barista being racist?, or just discussing one of the many racism in sports op-eds posted in national sports news every month, or does the author just not want to discuss critical issues under casual circumstance? Unclear and leaves me unsympathetic to either party.

2/10 stars
4
LW, you sound at best shallow and ill-informed. Sexy Barista Boy sounds at worst a little random.
5
I am lost on this one and don't get it. More info is needed.
6
Baristas (or is it Baristi?) are supposed to get your refreshments, anything else is just gravy. That said, I have no idea what this IA's point is. I agree with @3 ...2 out of 10 stars.
7
Huh? Was he being racist or talking about racism? If it's the latter than how was he hurting anyone as your title suggests? This is really unclear and pointless. I might as well have not read this based off the information it gave.
8
I guess "Sexy Barisat Boy" should have stuck to making suggestive comments about your "hot package"?

You sound a bit shallow, I, Anon. Perhaps you could have moved the conversation back to YOU by commenting on "Sexy Barisat Boy's hot package"?

Or maybe you should have just come out and asked him to hit the bathroom with you for a quick blow job...

Maybe the soy latte annoyed him so much that he threw in racism quip to annoy her/him into finally going away. He gets paid to make your beverage and tips to be flirty but then its time to go back to work. Why do people think servers are attracted to them because they are doing their job? And they are not mind readers who instantly know what topics to bring up or not. Go find a single guy and stop sexually harassing your server.

Gawd some people are just too PC for their own good. If light-hearted java conversation hurts, don't ever venture into one of those bikini barista places where boob flashes are on the menu. Oops, did I offend the LW once again? Pull the coal outta your ass - it's a diamond already!
11
I read this as 'racism: serious topic that killed my flirtation'. As a tongue in cheek sort of sad-trombone.

That said, yawn!
12
So him bringing up social issues made you feel uncomfortable? You poor dear.
13
Oh, and way to detail features that could get this dude ID'd IRL while being vague enough to imply that he was being racist.
14
i would bet the actual problem here is that anon. doesn't follow sports
15
Racism is a problem but I would be the actual problem here is that I anon doesn't follow sports.
16
I wonder if I anon follows sports?
17
I'll bet that I, Anon doesn't follow sports.
18
I Anon probably doesn't follow sports.
19
Hard to follow sports when you've dedicated so much of your life to cocaine and malt liquor.
20
It took me forever to remember what this was all about, but this is the article that I mentioned. I may have been a bit out of left field, but it seemed relevant enough to me. Definitely not being racist.

Maybe I anon is sensitive and self conscious about his or her ethnicity, and likes her interactions (especially flirting) to not "go there."

For some people who have experienced racism, just being reminded of their otherness can be a negative experience, because it has so often come in a negative context.

People who have experienced racism sometimes have PTSD or similar, so it doesn't take much.

Kindly sequester yourself in an Ivory Tower, and don't come out.

"For some people who have experienced racism, just being reminded of their otherness can be a negative experience, because it has so often come in a negative context."

Well, sure. So LW could have said that and specified why the comment gave her the PSTD instead of making everyone wonder what the hell. No one's asking LW not to be stung by racism...just to tell a story in a way so people know what the fuck happened.
26
It would help the LW if we knew the context of what the Barista said.

Was he being snide against certain players of a certain background hoping you felt the same way because you both were white (I presume?). A lot of the 'racism in American sports' conversations my friends tell me go something along the lines of:

"They have too many blacks in sports! We should have more white players or go back to all white teams. Its discrimination I tell you! Those people are always crying about being discriminated against, but look how many of them are in the NFL, that doesnt look like discrimination to me!"
27
This anon letter was too vague. I don't know if

1- the barista's comment was racist or borderline racist and that's what killed the conversation

or

2- the anon is such a lousy conversationalist that this anon took a great opportunity for an interesting conversation on a serious society problem and blew it. Intelligent conversation is sexy, after all.
28
@20,21 - see to me an article like that would be a conversation starter, not stopper. The interviewer did nothing wrong, and the reactions of the idiots reminds me of when that young kid sung the national anthem in a mariachi costume. Racists blew a gasket then, too.
29
The anonymity aspect of this story is inappropriate; it calls instead for identity. Let the search begin for the cute barista who has inadvertently generated so much froth and steam this week.

Calling all Stranger readers: Find this cute barista, so that he may speak to the question:

"Was the conversation side-stepped to 'racism in sports' because the patron was close to breaching the chat/flirt comfort level, or not? If not, what seemed to be happening from your unique perspective?"
30
I, Incoherent.
31
Get your latte and get the fuck out! The slave wage worker is not there to entertain your horny ass!
32
Sounds like I, Anon just wanted the barrista to be his bitch, wriggling and sighing as I, Anon flirted with him...and when the cute guy actually turned out to have a mind, I, Anon was as shocked as though a puppy could talk. I'll share a secret: barristas hate people like this.
33
I'd like to see that tattoo.

Please wait...
