If this was true, and they didn't like the meal, then they don't have to tip. Even if they liked the meal, they don't have to tip. Get over yourself, that you get a tip no matter what.
I see fucktards in public like this more and more these days. Acting out in public because they drive a Lexus, Beemer or Audi and really dont have a pot to piss in. I say to the service industry that has to serve asswipes like this - spit on their food. They deserve it in spades and should never leave the confines of their homes in the first place. It doesnt matter what time of year it is!
Totally sucks. But . . . maybe the first mistake was re-seating the couple. That only fed into their sense of entitlement. If they to sit complain while sitting at the bar/counter, the response is to politely but firmly remind them that they're at a restaurant at a peak time on a very busy day (and without a reservation, if that applies) and then ask them to leave. Beggars can't choose. Well, actually, they can: 1) Take the seat that's available and like it; 2) Wait for a better table; 3) Go elsewhere.
You know that once they start demanding (whether aggressively or passively), they're going to be trouble - for you and the rest of the staff and customers. It's better for everyone if they just go.
@6, No We Don't. Do you tip minimum wage workers in businesses other than a restaurant/bar? Say like the minimum wage worker at you grocery store?, gas station, fast food joint?, department store? If not, then STFU
@10 You tip for service, not the food quality. Whatever you need to tell yourself to save a couple bucks I guess. I guess being an asshole and being cheap go hand in hand. I tip in industries where it is expected, because that's part of someone's expected income. If someone carries my bags at the grocery store (like when I broke my leg) I absolutely tip, even if I don't like the groceries they carried for me. You make a good point though - if you don't tip everyone you come into contact with you don't have tip anyone. Sound reasoning.
My sympathies to the letter writer. From my experiences in the service sector I know how sometimes a customer's rudeness cuts like a knife, that insults or complaints that you can typically brush off somehow go straight to the heart.
I hope you feel some relief being able to vent your frustrations online. Best wishes
The fact that every time a customer is unpleasant and doesn't tip, we read about it on "I, Anonymous" is proof of just how rare this shocking phenomenon is.
Who doesn't like sitting at the bar? For a party of 2, the bar rules. Some people shouldn't leave the house.
Also, can we just ignore the Mr. Pinks of these sorts of threads? If someone pouted "I don't HAVE to wear pants when I drive my car if I don't want to!" would you be arguing with them?
If you all are feeling a little bummed out I'd like you all to imagine for one second the shear amount of spit, piss, and feces Thrill Killer has unknowingly consumed at every restaurant and bar he has ever taken the time to (dis)grace.
If they actually did "reek of privilege and entitlement" they would have had a reservation at someplace like Canlis. These people just sound like garden variety bores.
I waited tables for 10+ years. If you got so stressed you had to cry over a comment not even directed towards you ("Well this sucks!"), you should look for work another field.
Do you do this for every supposed rude customer.?

Name the place too.
It's called a Yelper Special.

And tipping is really stupid, but I do it in 98% of cases, where the service is at least acceptable.
Yeah. Imagine that. Feel better now, don't you?
