This is impressive. So, people in rural America vote for Trump, who is against any form of government spending that helps ordinary Americans experiencing financial difficulties. Trump is elected. Then, for reasons that make sense to almost no centrist economist (and reasons that are too easily muddled with the democratic programs of the anti-globalist movements on the left), he begins trade wars with old capitalist allies and the factory of the world, China. Now, the cow and country people are freaking out because they have lost access to huge markets. The US market cannot absorb their surpluses. They might be out of business before the trade wars are over. So, what does their MAGA leader do? Makes them into welfare cowboys. Yes, you read me correctly. Farmers Trump harmed are going to be bailed out with a large sum of government/taxpayer cheese. This after a huge tax cut. After soaring deficits. What about the balanced budget? GOP? The myth is shredded. This is just too rich.
The Trump administration on Tuesday said it would provide up to $12 billion in aid for U.S. farmers to shield them from the repercussions felt by trade spats between the United States and China, the European Union and others. The plan focuses on Midwest soybean producers and others targeted by retaliatory measures. The Agriculture Department said the proposal would include direct assistance for farmers, purchases of excess crops and trade promotion activities aimed at building new export markets. Officials said the plan would not require congressional approval and would come through the Commodity Credit Corporation, a wing of the department that addresses agricultural prices.
The reason for these handouts? The mid-term election, of course.
The former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, used to do the exact same thing with his rural folk. During election season, he would send them bags of sadza (corn meal) for their votes. And it worked. Every time. A full belly did the trick. That and some ballot voodoo guaranteed Mugabe's reelection. But once he was back in office, the country stomachs were empty again right quick. How is it they were so easily fooled all of the time?
Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, told ABC that though the "administration's move was 'encouraging for the short term. What farmers in Iowa and throughout rural America need in the long term are markets and opportunity, not government handouts.'" What is this man even talking about? Has he not observed any part of this presidency over the past two blistering years? There is nothing in it (no statement, no action, no decision) that can be described as long-termish. Trump is only about the now. Yesterday's gone. Tomorrow may never be his. He does everything one day at a time.
Those shipments of sadza to the farmers in Iowa and other rural parts will stop as soon as the rural votes are not needed. Best believe that. I would not even be surprised if most of that $12 billion vanishes on November 7, the day after the election, no matter who wins or loses. And people wonder why the "coastal elites" have so much contempt for these town and country types. They are not just easily fooled, but fooled by the dumbest stunts imaginable, like $12 billion during the election season! If Trump thinks you are stupid, and you do the stupid shit he comes up with, what are we to think? And the crisis was made by the man they voted for. And now they are reduced to precarious handouts. Exit your welfare queens and Obama phones and enter you as welfare cowboys.
