Jayapal is still in the doghouse with me for calling on Biden and Putin to get together and carve up Ukraine between them -- and then blaming her staff instead of admitting what a terrible idea this was.
Of course she's going to win easily. I won't even argue that she shouldn't. But she'll do it without my vote.
Marcus Charles wrote the YES on 2109 statement in the voter's guide, and yet the Stranger is having their election night party at the Crocodile, owned by the same Marcus Charles. Lame.
The WA Cares Act is a horrible, horrible program. Good lord, actually read about it and learn that it is not going to do a damn thing to actually cover any long-term care costs. $37k? That will be gone in less than a month. It's a complete waste of money. The young workers are going to pay a shit-ton into the program and get almost nothing out.
Pretty easy on the initiatives:
WA Cares Act: Yes
Capital Gains Tax: Yes
Carbon Tax: No
@8 Admittedly, WA Cares isn't a great program in and of itself. But it enshrines into law the idea that long-term care is a public good that government should pay for. Its critics say the state will eventually have to bail it out, and they're probably right, but that's fine with me. Voting "no" to keep it.
@8 Have you ever taken care of an elderly person's finances? I have. No, $37,000 won't cover everything for very long, but it's a damn nice supplement for someone on a fixed income. An extra $1500 a month for two years would've definitely helped my family stretch things out.
And someone making $60K a year can be fully vested in the program after 10 years, paying in just $3500, so it's got a pretty good ROI. Will young workers pay more? Yes, but they'll also be eligible for more money as the benefit increases over time.
As for the Capital Gains tax, it sure must be nice to have over $250,000 in stock sale PROFITS each year. Too bad you don't want to buy some kids some books by paying a paltry 7% tax on that money you made sitting on your ass.
I think it depends on what the definition of "long-term" is and the condition of the recipient. When Mother Vel-DuRay was dying, she spent the last week or so in a hospice facility. It was a very nice place where she got excellent care, and also considerably less expensive than the nursing facility she had been in for the few weeks prior to that (she went blessedly fast, all things considered)
If Kamala Harris gets in AND the Democrats can get control of the Congress, AND Those Horrible Republicans or That Dreadful Supreme Court can't block it somehow, her proposal for Medicare coverage for homecare would be a true blessing. And while we're at it, I hope they kill "Medicare Advantage".
I'm not sanguine about the prospects for some of the initiatives. 2117, for example. I know some perfectly normal, otherwise intelligent, people who have vowed to vote against it because they fancy themselves as foodies and don't want to "lose" their stupid gas stoves. (I hate gas stoves). And the tax one? I've yet to meet a native Washingtonian who didn't have the anti-income tax chip implanted at birth.
The only reason these initiatives are on the ballot is that Those Horrible Republicans think it will drive turnout for their moronic, malevolent excuse for a party.
agreed, Catalina.

Phoebe dear, I detest gas stoves because they are polluting and pretentious. Granted, with electronic ignition, they aren't as awful as they used to be, but they are still awful. My parents house was built by a gas company employee, and had gas everything - including the refrigerator and the trash burner (yes, children - we used to burn our trash). Mother Vel-DuRay got rid of everything as soon as she could. We lived better electrically.
kristofarian dear, the Tea Baggers went away because the checks stopped coming.
SeattleLove, dear, I grew up in Iowa (but visited Seattle several times as a youngster). As our dear Kristofarian points out, everybody used to burn their trash, all across the country. Commercial and municipal trash in Seattle used to be dumped into the Sound. It wasn't until the late 1960s that Seattle started treating its sewage before discharging it into the Sound.
Holmes dear, there was no PSE back then. It was Puget Power, and it was just electricity. They bought Wasington Natural Gas in the 90's(?) and it became Puget Sound Energy.
Thank you for NOT endorsing Jim Mayhew, claims to be a Democrat, but was a disaster as a City of Snoqualmie council member, pushed to develop hundreds of acres of a designated potentially among the most polluted sites in the state with no requirement for a comprehensive environmental study or requirement for clean up. Current property owner has been taken to court for polluting the site currently and the site has been documented as polluted for the better part of a century. That's just one of many reasons to not vote for Mayhew. Sexual Assault victims have been harassed by him. Although he claims to be for women's rights, he isn't in practice.
All the initiatives will pass.

Upthegrove's groundgame (talking to natural resource users) has been terrible
When do I get my ballot?
All the MAGA states are voting already.

Melissa Chaudhry is culture vampire. A white American woman who wears a hijab? NOPE.
What’s even scarier than Trump?
He will be pushed aside in a couple months, then J D Vance and the fascist Tech Bros will take over

@12: You don't like gas stoves because of that slight/infrequent (hopefully) smell of gas? I get it.

And PSE thanks you. For conserving the gas so they can run it in their turbines and sell you the power at 4x the price per Btu.

This has to be one of the most Seattle articles, ever.
