Continuing—and absolute yay for—the Symphony's 10 p.m. concert series in the lobby of Benaroya. It's like church for listeners who crave surprises and risks. This installment features two pieces by composers under 40 and three arias from the revered elder György Ligeti's only opera, Le Grand Macabre. The opera, which premiered in 1978, represented a turning point for Ligeti—after this, his music got weirder, more his. His opera breaks into the future by pastiching the past, juxtaposing styles that span from Monteverdi to Verdi. Then there's young composer Andrew Norman's piece Try, from 2011, another celebration of restlessness. He created a series of musical phrases that repeatedly attempt to find their way, yielding discoveries in the process. And Djuro Zivkovic's mystical composition On the Guarding of the Heart won the tremendously prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition for 2014. Symphony Associate Conductor Stilian Kirov leads. JEN GRAVES
