For ’60s liberals, Lyndon Johnson was one of the era’s most reviled figures—a bullying, power-mongering shitkicker-in-a-tie who ramped up the Vietnam War. But All the Way, the first half of Robert Schenkkan’s theatrical juggernaut, gorgeously complicates the picture, showing us a man who rammed the Civil Rights Act through a stubborn Congress the only way he knew how: vicious manipulation. Schenkkan’s script and its legions of characters—from Stokely Carmichael to Strom Thurmond—do their work in broad strokes instead of fine details, but the effect is as big, rowdy, conflicted, and compelling as the man himself.
