It’s been four years since Wolf Eyes last confronted Seattle with their malevolent blasts of aural antipathy—too long. Their devastating set at 2006’s Wooden Octopus Skull Pfestival achieved a frequency that repeatedly sent waves of pain through my testicles. (That was a first… and, I hope, a last.) Back in 2004, when Wolf Eyes had just released their Sub Pop debut LP, Burned Mind, I wrote this about the Michigan maulers: “Wolf Eyes’ massive canon is how rock sounds after it’s suffered a genetic catastrophe, its Grand Guignol mutations spasming with macabre intensity.” Thousands of tinnitus episodes later, Wolf Eyes have changed personnel (James Baljo joins vets John Olson and Nate Young), and with their last studio release, No Answer - Lower Floors, they’ve dialed down the cacophony while maintaining a foreboding, Throbbing Gristle–y air. The music’s been rebranded as Trip Metal™, but it’s still damned infernal. Fuck your haunted houses—Wolf Eyes offer a way scarier pre-Halloween experience. DAVE SEGAL
