On his third full-length, Perfume Genius (Seattle’s Mike Hadreas) faces his demons head on. In its tapestry of poignant piano, late-night sax, and insidious synths, Too Bright falls somewhere between John Lennon’s primal-scream-inspired Plastic Ono Band and John Grant’s HIV-diagnosis-inspired Pale Green Ghosts. Like Grant, Hadreas is a master of the confessional ballad, but whereas the former sings in a burnished baritone, Hadreas uses a bruised and tremulous tenor. Producer Adrian Utley (Portishead) creates a church-like ambiance in which he turns on a dime from direct (“I Decline”) to distorted (“My Body”). There are no messy outbursts, but this elegant expression of anger is no less devastating for its restraint. And album highlight “Queen” is a gorgeously defiant anthem for the ages. KATHY FENNESSY
