Grayskul, the Nightcappers, Imaginary Friends, and Guests

High Dive Fremont
Sat., Jan. 17, 9 p.m. 2015 21+

The duo of Onry Ozzborn and JFK were on the whole overcast, underslept, X’s-for-eyes hiphop tip long before your sad boys and your Personal Journal–ing emo rappers. They formed Grayskul after hooking up in the sprawling Northwest collective Oldominion at the turn of the millennium, and their gothic tales and abstract imagery were artsy without being affected, laid atop production that knocked with a retro-futurist bent. It should come as no surprise that the group named Cannibal Ox’s seminal The Cold Vein as a prime influence on their early work. Their most recent album, 2013’s Zenith, is a sprawling collection of 17 tracks that broadens Grayskul’s core aesthetic while maintaining their trademark dark humor and densely packed wordplay, with a diverse set of beats of a quality befitting the upper echelon of the underground.
