After recording two albums in the Bay Area, Soft Moon main man Luis Vasquez relocated to Venice, Italy, to record the third. Though he describes Deeper as a more personal record, the music sounds as detached and isolated as ever, like electronic scores for the spooky movies that live inside his head. The lyrics may come from the heart, but they can be hard to make out, though he’s sounding more human than ghostly these days, somewhat akin to Trent Reznor or Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan (back in his bedroom-recording days, Vasquez whispered so as not to disturb his neighbors). LA punk trio Girl Tears keep things short and fast. If they’re not as gloomy as Vasquez, they bring equal amounts of energy and intensity. KATHY FENNESSY
