Sam Prekop is best known as the singer and guitarist in the long-running Chicago post-rock band the Sea and Cake, but he’s also a solo artist who (most recently) performs works entirely on modular synthesizer. His second collection of synth-only songs, The Republic, was partially composed for use in a video installation—hence all the abstract melodies and otherworldly effects. And while there is a bit of barren Martian landscape going on, there’s also surprising warmth and life radiating through his analog sequencers, even teetering toward something danceable. Now, for the first time, Prekop is taking his hulking synth on the road, where he and Sea and Cake bandmate Archer Prewitt will perform two sets—one improvised with Prekop on synth, the other of “classic” Sea and Cake songs. I recommend you stop by Ike’s first. KATHLEEN RICHARDS
