Toni Morrison called Ta-Nehisi Coates the next James Baldwin, and she couldn't be more right. During his tenure as a national correspondent for the Atlantic, Coates wrote "The Case for Reparations," a piece of investigative journalism that's as beautiful as it is convincing. Coates is a master of using literary devices to frame his philosophical positions in ways that hit home, and his new book, Between the World and Me, does exactly that. In a long letter to his son, Coates describes the way an abstract concept like systemic racism manifests as real gashes, bruises, and bullet holes in black bodies. In interviews, Coates is humorous and charming, so there'll be some laughter to help ease the pain during this reading.
