In a city swarming with folk-rock outfits, Seattle’s Cave Singers stand beard and sloped shoulders above the pack. Much of their distinctiveness comes from Pete Quirk’s singing, which in a review of 2011’s excellent No Witch LP, I described as “a strafing bray that encrusts the music with dump-truck rust and nettles.” In short, the Cave Singers sound gully—like real-deal folk-blues dudes with fire-and-brimstone experiences in their sordid pasts. And their tunes are moving and pretty, to boot. DAVE SEGAL
