A great bill becomes even better when it falls on Halloween. Bay Area trio Shannon and the Clams recently released their fourth full-length, Gone by the Dawn, while London trio Shopping haven’t been around as long, but they’ve got their sound down to a science, possibly because the members logged time in other bands, like Wet Dog (whose Frauhaus was one of the highlights of 2010). Shopping’s new record, Why Choose, is as spare and spiky as Gone is soulful and slinky. If one band evokes the girl groups of the 1960s, the other evokes a different kind of girl group, particularly post-punk outfits like LiliPUT. Gazebos, Nail Polish, and Underworld Scum, who all feature visual artists, round out the bill with brazen attitude and restless energy. KATHY FENNESSY
