New York’s Daptone Records has been associated with many fine recording artists, but since the early-2000s, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and the Budos Band have been their standard-bearers. The latter, a Brooklyn nine-piece, eschews vocals, aligning them more with London’s horn-heavy, jazz-funk disciples the Heliocentrics. On Budos Band's fifth album, Burnt Offering, the nonet adds a dose of black-light metal to their Afrobeat bouillabaisse. It’s not quite Black Sabbath or Deep Purple, but the heavier, fuzzier approach recalls the instrumental interludes on which those British longhairs would stretch their muscles, so it’s only fitting that they backed up label mate Charles Bradley on his slow-burn cover of Sabbath’s "Changes." Bonus points for the artwork on their latest record: a Tolkien-style wizard with steaming, skull-covered cauldron. KATHY FENNESSY
