Avant-garde pianist/vocalist/eccentricist Diamanda Galás is touring for only six dates behind her two new LPs, All the Way and At Saint Thomas the Apostle Harlem, and this is her first Seattle date in years. Galás rejects the goth label, despite an abrasively spooky musical output, a voice known to incite horror, and a #TradGoth pale-skinned/red-lipped/dark-haired appearance. She says, “I am not a goth—I’m a Greek… Being a Greek is not a geographical reality, it’s a spiritual reality. Greek people are always talking loud, they’re screaming all the time, it’s part of the culture that came up with Greek tragedy.” The oft-frightening narratives in Galás’s work unfold as Greek tragedies themselves, with loss, revenge, blood, and guts to the forefront. This is a very rare chance to witness the reluctant queen of 1980s avant-goth piano theatrics, and the show is sold out, but fortunate ticket holders are in for the gloomiest of aural treats.
