Nails’ grinding tempos, palm-muted breakdowns, and frothing rage will remind even the most jaded hardcore kid of the adrenaline kick from their first show. Last year’s You Will Never Be One of Us found the band on a bigger label, but the bigger budget didn’t diminish Nails’ no-frills ferocity. On the downside, increased visibility meant more media coverage of vocalist/guitarist Todd Jones’s online attacks at fans and critics over perceived slights. In a context-free scenario, Nails sound like an urgent lashing out at a corrupt world. But after reading Jones’s threatening tweets toward “pussies” and people who “probably got bullied in school,” the songs sound like the tantrums of someone who’s upset with the results from google-searching their own band’s name. This should be an amazing show—and perhaps an even better show if Nails see this preview beforehand. BRIAN COOK
