It takes gumption—and no little skill—to re-create Miles Davis’s consensus Best Jazz Album of All-Time, Kind of Blue, in its entirety. (Please don’t say, “So what.”) But that’s what New York quartet Mostly Other People Do the Killing did in 2014. There’s more to them than reverence for tradition, though. Not unlike the Bad Plus, MOPDTK mess with rock, pop, and classical music, finding interesting ways to make incongruity swing. They’re yet another group breathing fire into jazz, keeping it vital and relevant in the 21st century.
