The Intelligence leader Lars Finberg returns to the city of his greatest glory, where he won a 2011 Stranger Genius Award, with a new unit, and if you dig his best-known band, you’ll like the Bakersfield Moonlighters, too. The debut album for In the Red, Moonlight Over Bakersfield, finds Finberg waxing acerbic and existential over weird and wobbly garage-rock that’s laced with warped keyboards and other intriguing uses of guitar and bass distortion. As strange as the Bakersfield Moonlighters’ sonic world gets here, Finberg is still writing songs that aspire to earworm status. It’s a balancing act he and his accomplices carry out with panache. This is also the final gig for great garage-rock mavericks Dreamsalon.
