"The Symbolist Movement in late nineteenth century European art coincided with political turmoil in the Grand Duchy of Finland, then a part of Russia. Painters such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Hugo Simberg merged the Symbolist aesthetic with themes drawn from Finnish life and folklore, especially the Finnish national epic The Kalevala."
