Alice Walker is taking over Seattle this year, and I'm fine with that. She'll be opening up the poetry series for Seattle Arts & Lectures in October, but this summer, the Paramount will run Tony-winning director John Doyle's version of this Tony-winning musical, which is based on Walker's Pulitzer Prize–winning novel of the same name. If you haven't read the book, or if your mom didn't sit you down and make you watch the 1985 film adaptation starring Oprah, you should know that Walker sets the story in Jim Crow Georgia. Celie grows up the victim of unspeakable violence at the hands of men. This trend follows her into adulthood, but she comes into her own with the help of strong female role models.
