The fast-food workers who led the Fight for $15 movement in Seattle (and who continue to struggle to make sure the city enforces those laws) were not acting in isolation. Around the world, farmers, garment workers, hotel staff, and laborers in all kinds of industries have also been trying (and sometimes failing) to build coalitions in an effort to secure basic rights for their fellow workers. In We Are All Fast-Food Workers Now, Dartmouth professor of history Annelise Orleck hands the mic to the people who fought these battles, allowing them to tell their own stories of victory and defeat. The Stranger's own housing and labor reporter, Heidi Groover, will join Professor Orleck onstage for a conversation about the state of the global labor movement and its many visions for the future.
