Jenny Xie's intelligence, precision, and genuine fascination with language shine through in her stunning debut from Graywolf Press, Eye Level. As her persona wanders from Phnom Penh, Corfu, Hanoi, and New York "trying on each passing town for size," she tells stories of immigration and emigration, rooting and uprooting, and of language's ability to connect us but also to keep us apart. She fills her poems with quiet humor, endearing self-deprecation, fresh imagery, and clear-eyed reckoning—all the qualities of a collection you'll want to return to over and over again, not because you're obsessed or anything, but because you really like spending time in this kind of mind. She'll be joined by Cathy Linh Che, whose Split won the Norma Farber First Book Award and the Association for Asian American Studies Award.
