Meg Remy was living in the States when she launched U.S. Girls in 2007, but she's a Canadian citizen now, which makes the name of her noise-pop project even more perfect. Anything too straightforward wouldn't fit a sonic architect who takes recognizable elements like girl-group harmonies and soul samples and scrambles them into something new and unfamiliar. The music’s pretty, ugly, angry, and celebratory. It's the Ronettes by way of the Residents; ABBA by way of Crass. On her riveting new album, In a Poem Unlimited, Remy references male-created works about men, like Hamlet, to interrogate male power and female agency.
