Formed 20 years ago in Iowa City, Burmese have had a revolving-door lineup, which has included at various points in time the Oh Sees' John Dwyer and Flying Luttenbachers' Weasel Walter behind the drum kit. Now operating out of Oakland, Burmese use the tools of rock to generate noise pieces that spasm with unruly power. The best noise musicians know when to relent and when to put listeners on blast—like Wolf Eyes and Pharmakon, to name but two. Burmese are masters of creating tension through intelligent dynamics. Their 2004 album on Load Records, Men, might be the best introduction to Burmese's controlled sonic catastrophes.
